The Catholic Church sacrifices charity at the altar of bigotry

ZJ: The Washington, D.C. City Council is currently considering a bill to legalize same-sex marriage within the District. This week, the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington claimed that if this bill passes, Catholic organizations could be prevented from discriminating against gay people, and required to provide equal employment benefits to married gay couples.
Catholic charities currently have millions of dollars worth of contracts with the city to provide social services, such as homeless shelters, women's shelters, medical clinics, foster care and adoption services. The Archdiocese has threatened to end these contracts and stop providing these services if they aren't allowed to discriminate against gay people.
It just goes to show how important charity is to the Catholic Church: not quite as important as favoring heterosexuals. They are so dedicated to helping the poor, that they'll gladly stop serving their needs if it means they have to treat gay people equally. They've shown us where their priorities truly lie, and it makes them look like human garbage. When it comes to helping those who need it most, they'd rather turn them away, just to satisfy their religious prejudices. That's how much they really care.
So why does an organization like that even deserve these contracts? They want to be allowed to use public funding to discriminate against the public who's providing the funding. If the Catholic Church had their way, people would be paying to be discriminated against! And if that's what it takes for them to provide their services, perhaps it would be better if they didn't.
They are seriously threatening to withhold crucial resources from the most vulnerable members of the community, and they're doing it to coerce the government and force their religious bias into civil law.
No city should allow its social services to be controlled by the Catholic Church. Washington needs to just rip them off like a band-aid and get it over with. And then find someone who can get the job done right.
