Negative wrote an essay for school about EMPTV. Some of it is fictional. It is
presented here completely unedited.
"ASL"
In 1969 the US Department of Defense created something called
"ARPANET." A large network linking computers across America. The very first
version of the "internet." In only four years, ARPANET went international. Jump
ahead to 1986 and NSFNET is born, a much more advanced version of ARPANET.
Another four years pass and ARPANET dissolves and relinquishes control to
NSFNET. Thanks to these early prototypes, we now have access to a large global
network. An internet.
The Modern Internet
Nowadays, the internet is a major role in people's lives. The internet
serves as a broad medium to stay in contact with friends, play games, research
information, and other spiffy things. However, with a growing concern for
pornography and other risque websites, could the internet be having some
adverse effects on the users?
EMPTV
The online community, EMPTV arose on March 28th, 2004. Soon the
community begat its own message board and IRC channel(chat-room.) The creator
and caretaker is 15-year-old "rmuser." The EMPTV group has been involved or
been the source of many online "attacks." Most of these stem from the
community's local chat-room.
Internet Terrorism
To help you better understand the sadistic nature of these attacks, I
plan on touching on a number of individual examples of EMPTV's internet
terrorism. I'll start small and build up to the more vile attacks.
First off, the case of young "mousse" and his sister who we will keep
nameless. The EMPTV chat group wasted no time making fun of mousse for being
overweight, angering him several times. They eventually took their trickery too
far when they taunted young mousse's older sister for being raped (anally) a
total of four times. If this wasn't enough, the group continued.
EMPTV member, "Overlord" took over a message board that had several
ties in EMPTV, a forum called ABSForums. He used his moment in the spotlight to
share nude pictures of his ex-girlfriend with the world. His reasoning: She
gave him an STD. However, his internet prank became a lot more real when his
victim sued him later that month.
The creator of EMPTV manages to get in on the fun as well. rmuser has
told member how we was sexually attracted to his cousin at one time. A remark
which has gotten him teased since. rmuser isn't always the victim, however. The
boy once told a friend of his to go ahead and kill himsel when the friend
claimed he was suicidal. rmuser's friend went on to commit suicide.
The EMPTV group has done their share of good however. After an online
anti-vigilante group, AVSO threatened EMPTV member, Geris, EMPTV sprung to
action. Geris recently turned fourteen and is the community's youngest member.
I will go into more detail on AVSO later.
Zeshin, another member of EMPTV, revered for his sharp tongue and love
of all things asian has played a part of many attacks. Besides assisting in a
few previous events, Zeshin is the man who looks for terrible, disgusting
images to submit to the message board. These images often depict horrible
cartoon dismemberment and have been known to dip into necrophilia at times.
Probably one of the few innocents in EMPTV is Nanolather. A righteous,
upstanding christian, Nanolather does his best to avoid all things evil.
However, this did not stop the EMPTV crowd from scaring his little sister by
"yelling" sexual things at her. For instance, "I'M GOING TO PUT IT IN YOU."
Nanolather's sister left, confused and annoyed.
Besides these other attacks, EMPTV group seems to have a passion for
offensive jokes. Ranging from homosexuals to black people to the holocaust,
it's hard to find a group that hasn't been made fun of. One particular member,
VenusBlue, seems obsessed with rape and dead baby jokes. The group took the
jokes a step too far by making fun of holocaust victims in the presence of a
jew. This offended new member, killQ, became very upset and "quit." killQ
refused to come back to EMPTV ever again. Even with killQ gone, the members
continued making fun of jews. Going as far as to plan out a "Nazi Carwash"
where jews would drive in and not drive out. These got the owner of the server
extremely angry.
Finally, Zeshin signed up for a children's craft website with
dishonorable intentions. He "spammed" their message boards with pictures of
"Goatse." Goatse is a picture of a middle-aged man, stretching his rectum to
insane proportions. This photo is an online cult legend and is seen by almost
all online teenagers at some time or another.
AVSO
The AVSO was/is a group of people protecting pedophiles. Their goal was
to find "vigilantes" who were exposing pedophiles to their families and get the
vigilantes themselves in trouble. This meant finding information on a target
and call his/her house with whatever dirt they could find. EMPTV became
involved when Geris, youngest member of EMPTV's community, was contacted by
AVSO. AVSO had a lot of damaging info on Geris and planned on calling the
police and his parents. EMPTV soon morally tore apart AVSO for being a group of
sickos. Annoyed and disgusted, EMPTV's Zeshin called the FBI and reported AVSO.
Other Internet Attacks
EMPTV isn't the only source of trouble-makers online. There are
numerous people searching for a laugh at other people's expense. For example, a
young girl harassed after claiming she was raped recently. On another message
board, a woman insulted another woman's dead baby. Another forum member made
fun of that woman in turn for being sterile. Other incidents could include a
man claiming he was raping dead infants as he typed.
Not all offensive things happen in chat-rooms and message boards,
however. A popular writer named Maddox constantly writes articles designed to
be funny and just plain mean. Another man designed a website where you could
play "dress-up" with a crucified Jesus. Clothing even included a little dress.
Anothe man set out to find roadside memorial crosses so he could insult the
shoddy craftsmanship and tacky idea of roadside memorials. While some of these
ideas are funny, I'm a bit confused how far people are going to tick people off
for a laugh.
The Real World
While it all seems fake, like innocent fun and games, it's curious to
consider what would happen if these downright sadistic attitudes were carried
over to the real world. Maybe getting carried away on the internet could have
serious consequences. A young girl in Japan stabbed a schoolmate for calling
her fat on a message board. While it all may seem like a game, the internet is
real, and I believe this loss of respect online could easily begi to show up in
the real world. When I posed the question to rmuser and asked what he thought
should be done he had only one thing to say. Something I feel sums this article
up rather nicely.
"You can all go fuck yourselves."
